It’s that time of year when we say goodbye to the old and hi to the new. The Big Ball drops to countdown the start of the new year, a new beginning full of optimism and joy. We found a public beach, staked out a secluded spot, and unpacked all our New Year supplies. It was cold, given this was the Connecticut coastline with the waters of Long Island Sound pushing waves on shore. I think we were in Westport, but it could have been anywhere from Stonington to New Haven to Milford to Greenwich.

For something more traditional, consider a First Night celebration like the big one they have in Hartford, CT. It really recognizes that New Year’s Eve is a time for renewal and new beginnings. It’s an awesome opportunity for the community to look ahead collectively with hope and optimism and appreciate its common bonds. The name “First Night” symbolizes this forward look, even though December 31 is actually the “last night”, or “final night” of the year.
