Bromley is a London Borough in the United Kingdom, and part of greater London. Bromley is also the main town located in this Borough. It is the largest Borough in area in London and is made up of both rural and urban communities. There are many places of interest and lotds to do for tourists – so whats on in Bromley?
For people who love the outdoors, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature while in Bromley. Over one hundred parks and open spaces are located here. Perhaps the best known is the Crystal Palace Park. It is also used for various sporting and patriotic events. The tea maze, located within the park, is one of the largest in England, and it provides a lot of fun. Sculptures of prehistoric animals such as dinosaurs were made in the 1900s and are full size. This large park is one of the beginning points for the Green Chain Walk. This is a system of scenic walks between the park and the Thames River. It consists of 300 green open spaces with no buildings around.
The Crystal Palace residential area by the park, is also the meeting place of four London Boroughs, including Bromley, and has many shops and restaurants. It is noted for its fine Victorian architecture and many Victorian villas surround the park.
Scadbury Park is another great place for enjoying the outdoors, with over 300 acres of countryside with ancient trees, beautiful flowers, many walkways and a working farm.
Charles Darwin lived in Bromley, and his house as well as the grounds are open for tours. You can view Darwin’s study which looks the same as when he worked there. Visitors can enjoy a stroll around the 33 acres of grounds and gardens. This is one of the top tourist attractions in the area.
Those who are interested in history will particularly want to see the Chislehurst Caves. These are not natural caves but ancient flint mines which are hundreds of years old. The caves have had various uses over the years. Probably the best known was that the caves were used as an air raid shelter during the bombing of Britain in the Second World War. The air raid shelter sign, detailing the rules that were expected to be followed, remains today. During the height of the war, the caves were home to some 15,000 people, complete with a chapel and a hospital. In later years, the cave has been the location for many Bromley events and has been used for both musical and television venues. A guided tour of the caves provides lots of information about the history and folklore of the caves.
Another popular tourist attraction is the Crofton Roman Villa. Almost one hundred years ago workmen happened to discover Roman artifacts. It later was determined to have been the site of a Roman villa some time between 140 and 400 AD. Today the remains of ten rooms can be viewed. The area is protected today by being surrounded by a modern building.
The Bromley museum is in a medieval building and has no admission fee. Exhibitions and events vary throughout the year.
Bromley is a very diverse Borough with a lot of things for tourists to see and do. It has a good mix of both urban and rural communities and yet is very close to central London.
