February 3, 2012 FAQ’s About Sump Pumps
Q) This is my first spring in a new home. When it rains my pump
runs about every 20 minutes. My previous home was high on a hill
with slopes all around. My builder says this is normal but is it?
I am about 75 feet from a two acre pond, all new construction and
paranoid since my old house did not have a pump.
A) Yes normal. This could very well be normal depending on the size
of you sump pit ,amount of water in water table, and the gpm/ gph
of your pump. You should invest in a back up system for the pump.
The best choices are battery back up w/ a trickle charger,or
water powered, which runs no matter if you have power for
extended periods of time.
Q) What is the best sump pump? Our basement has flooded twice this
year, and we have tried 3 different sump pumps, and none of them
have worked like they were supposed to.
A) Gallons per Minute (GPM) and how high the pump needs to lift the
water. You need to know the head needed to buy the right one.
The Zoeller M57 is a great reliable pump for you to consider. The
higher the lift the lower the lower the GPM.
Q) Mold remediation, sump pump, dehumidifier? My husband and I have
noticed a horrible smell in our new home. When it was cold and
our heat was turned on, it smelled worse. I now have the windows
open. Long story short: a mold remediation guy came out and
looked in our crawl space.
A) You must get to the source of the moisture, be it water seeping
in through cracks in the foundation, moisture from a downstairs
bathroom not ventilated, lack of a dehumidifier in warm weather,
crawlspace ground not covered with thick overlapping layers of
plastic, etc. Is your new home in a development of all new
houses, maybe everyone has the problem. Basically, basements
need to be very well controlled in humidity, it must be less
than 50% or all kinds of problems develop.
Q) My friend’s sister wants her to block up the sump pump so it
won’t turn on and off all the time. Is a sump pump suppose to
be in a “pit” in your basement to pull water out of it? Please
tell all about them.
A) The sump pump is located below the level of the foundation of
the house for a reason. You are correct. Her thinking will
create a swimming pool. It prevents the water below the house
from coming into the basement, also water is routed from around
the house to the sump pump, and then the sump relocates the
water. This will cause the sump to turn on and off as needed,
especially when it rains. See Sump Pumps for reviews of good quality pumps.
